The Family Checkup: Positive Parenting Prevents Drug Use is a tool from NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) with great tips and talking points for parents to support good communication around alcohol and other drugs with their teens.

How to Keep Your Teen Safe in Just 15 Minutes is a great resource from Boston Children’s Hospital Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research.  In a series of short videos totaling less than 15 minutes Dr. Knight and Dr. Harris share information about how alcohol and marijuana impact the teen brain and what parents can do to prevent teen drug use in their family.

Get Smart About Drugs is a parent resource from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). It contains info on prescription drugs, text messaging and other resources: www.getsmartaboutdrugs.com

Hidden in Plain Sight is a mock teen bedroom that gives parents a chance to learn about some of the signs (and products related to) of teen alcohol and other drug use. This website provides a virtual bedroom to explore with photos and explanations. In Stoughton we offer a live version of this bedroom. Support for Parents

Stoughton Youth Commission - Do you need to talk to someone about HOW to talk to your child about drugs and alcohol? Are you concerned about your child’s behavior? Maybe you would like your child to talk to someone? Reach out the Youth Commission for FREE confidential counseling services and support from licensed mental health professionals. The staff are happy to provide everything from a quick phone consult to on-going family or individual youth counseling. Info in the link.

Learn to Cope – A local support group for parents and family members who are dealing with a loved one addicted to heroin, Oxycontin and other drugs.  Website includes lots of great information and opportunities to engage in a online community in addition to live weekly meetings. The closest group meeting is at Good Samaritan in Brockton.
