Release: Last night (20 Dec) the Stoughton Police Department in conjunction with Organizing Against Substances In Stoughton (OASIS) conducted a “shoulder tap” operation where underage volunteers were stationed outside of local liquor stores and asked adults to buy them alcohol. Since the objective of this operation was purely educational, if the adult refused they received a NO! thank you card from the volunteer that explained the alcohol laws and consequences for buying underage. If the adult agreed, they were met by undercover Stoughton officers and handed a YES? card and had the consequences of that action explained to them. 110 people were approached and there were 8 who agreed. We extend a warm thank you to the 102 people who said no. Though this is a 92.8% success rate, it is down from our usual 95-97% and the eight were near double our usual “YES” total of 4-5. Please remember, it is illegal to provide alcohol to minors. It’s just not worth the risk.
